The Good Party has criticised the Democratic Alliance for legally contesting the National Energy Regulator of South Africa’s electricity tariff hike.
Nersa approved a 15-point-one percent tariff hike for this
financial year whereas the City of Cape Town implemented an increase of
17-point-six percent instead.
According to The Good Party, the DA-led government is
hypocritical for challenging tariff hikes when they too are overcharging
electricity consumers.
The Good Party’s Secretary General, Brett Herron, further
called for the city to pay back the money it has been overcharging residents
for more than year.
He says the amount is estimated to be just under
330-million rand.
Meanwhile, The DA wants the entire energy crisis declared
unconstitutional.
“While you continue to suffer under more load shedding, the
National Energy Regulator of South Africa has granted Eskom and an unaffordable
electricity tariff hike of over 30% in the next two years.
“What that means is that you and I are paying more money
for electricity. Electricity that government cannot even provide,” said DA
leader John Steenhuisen, adding that it is not the fault of citizens.
