Residents in Mitchell’s Plain to protest as they are ''dissatisfied with unaffordable bills.’’

Residents in Mitchell’s Plain is set to march to the Lentegeur's Administrative office on Saturday, in protest of poor service delivery, high fuel prices and what convener, Natasha Gertse, says ‘’the dissatisfaction with unaffordable bills.’’

The protest is led by Gertse, who is from Electricity Must Fall campaign. Other groups, such as Stop City of Cape Town, and Good Angels Reaching Out organisation will also join the march.

‘’People are suffering. All the monies are going to the municipality. The electricity bills, rates - and water bills are huge [sic]. All of a sudden, people have new bills, which they never had before, because of property value. The pensioners are worse off, because the SASSA money they get, is going to electricity, never mind the municipal bill. People cannot cope,’’ said Natasha Gertse, founder of Electricity Must Fall.

Those attending the march will gather on AZ Berman Drive opposite the BP Garage from 9a.m. From 10a.m, protesters will make their way to Lentegeur's Administrative office in Merrydale Avenue, where they are expected to hand over a memorandum with a list of their grievances.

It is unclear what official will receive the memorandum, because in an email sent to Gertse, and seen by Bush Radio News, the City of Cape Town, says the electricity price hike is a national issue and cannot be blamed solely by the municipality.

‘’It’s really hard. People are not taking note, not even the Mayor [Geordin Hill-Lewis]. They are disregarding us, as they informed me they are not accepting the memorandum. This is why we need people to stand up and fight back,’’ said Natasha Gertse, founder of Electricity Must Fall.
