Badroodien condemned the incident.

‘''Extortion impacts the dignity of our residents, and the City condemns extortion efforts which jeopardise our efforts to deliver basic services. Today we had meaningful engagement with councillors and subcouncils to discuss solutions that we could consider as a way forward.''

The MMC said discussions are continuing between the City and ward councillors on long-term solutions to ensure services resumes.

''Ward councillors will also be liaising with community leaders in their wards so we can all work together to find a sustainable solution so that this service can resume its usual schedule, ensuring the safety of the workers on-site and while travelling,'' said Zahid Badroodien, MMC for water & sanitation.

Residents are urged to report threats of extortion to the City's anti-extortion hotline on 0800 006 992.
