Around 20 000 Minstrel performers will take to the streets of the Cape Town CBD, on Tuesday, for the annual Tweede Nuwe Jaar Minstrel Street Parade.
More than 35 Malay Choirs from across the city took part in the annual Cape Malay Choir Board Road March from City Hall to the Bo-Kaap, on Sunday.
Monday’s parade, organised by the Kaapse Klopse Karnival
Association, is expected to attract upwards of 80 000 spectators along Darling
Street, the Grand Parade, Adderley Street and into the Bo-Kaap.
Commencing from District Six around midday, the various
processions of performers will entertain crowds along the historic route before
they end in the Bo-Kaap.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith,
said the Twee Nuwe jaar celebrations has a huge historical and cultural
significance.
‘’They represent the rich heritage of our beautiful city
and mean so much to thousands of Capetonians who have grown up with the culture
associated with the Malay Choirs and the Tweede Nuwe Jaar Parade. The City of
Cape Town's annual support for the event is to ensure that we can contribute to
preserving these traditions for the next generation.’’
‘’We are looking forward to seeing all the performers take
to the streets, and we call on residents and visitors alike to come out and be
a part of it,’’ added Smith.
As a result of the event, a number of roads around the CBD
will be affected by the procession on 2 January 2024.
