Cell phone thief arrested at Ultra Festival

A pickpocket and cellphone thief is behind bars after Metro Police patrolling the Western Cape’s Ultra South Africa EDM Festival arrested him on Friday.

The police responded to reports of a pickpocketing incident and detained the suspect outside the Kenilworth Racecourse grounds.

It is reported that the suspect allegedly had 11 cell phones wrapped in tin foil and was arrested for possession of presumed stolen property.

The police warn that using foil is a common tactic used by technology thieves.

Law enforcement has urged festival-goers to secure their valuables to prevent theft.

“Tin foil only blocks some of the signal, which in turn causes the device to increase its battery usage as signal strength is amplified. Nevertheless, we always recommend attendees of such public events refrain from slipping cell phones or wallets into back pockets, as these make for easy pickings, as do those left in bags worn off the shoulder.

Where possible, it is recommended to place valuables in a bag that is worn on the front of a user and that is secured by means of a zip closing mechanism”, said MMC for Safety and Security, JP Smith.
