A man sustained an injury to his leg, following a fire that broke out at KTC informal settlement in Nyanga, on Friday afternoon. The fire was extinguish early evening, and no fatalities were reported.
Providing a preliminary report on Saturday, the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management says approximately 55 structures were destroyed, with an estimated 130 persons displaced.
‘’The Disaster Risk Management officials are currently busy
with assessments and are also coordinating relevant services and humanitarian
relief efforts. One adult male sustained
an injury to his leg and was taken to a nearby hospital,’’ said Sonica Lategan,
Disaster Risk Management Centre spokesperson.
‘’The City's Water and Sanitation Department and Eskom have
been notified to restore services to damaged infrastructure like overhead electrical lines, water taps
and ablution facilities. Our Solid Waste department has been activated to clear
the fire debris,’’ she added.
Lategan says non-profit organisation Gift of the Givers are
on site to provide assistance through the provision of food and blankets.
