Duo from Nyanga arrested for house robbery in Table View

Two suspects, believed to be from Nyanga, have been arrested in Table View, on Sunday for house robbery. The police’s Adriana Chandler said a family, residing in Cabernet Road, was watching television when four men entered the property through an unlocked front door, demanding jewelry and cash.

‘’The suspects tied the family members up and ransacked the house, taking jewelry, liquor, bank cards and cell phones before fleeing. A neighbour in Malbec Close heared a noise in his back garden and went to investigate.  He found an unknown man in his garden and a struggle ensued.  He shouted at another neighbour to call the police.  The local neighbourhood watch also alerted local armed response companies who arrived swiftly.  The suspect caught by the neighbour was handed over to the security officer, who shortly afterwards, handed him over to police,’’ explained Captain Adriana Chandler.

‘’Another armed response officer apprehended a second suspect not far from the scene.  Jewelry was recovered from both suspects which was handed back to the victim,’’ she added.

The men, aged 27 and 35, were arrested and detained at Table View Police Station.  They will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates Court once charged.

Table View Station Commander, Colonel Tjikamba Mbangu applauded the neighbour and armed response companies for their swift reaction in the apprehension of the suspects.  He also commended the Table View neighbourhood watch for being the eyes and ears of the community and for sharing the information about the crime taking place with all role players.

Mbangu shared the following tips with residents:

·        Make sure that doors are locked, and all windows closed, even when at home.

·        Activate your alarm system, if you have one.  If you don't have an alarm, please contact an armed response company in your neighbourhood to give you an affordable quotation.

·        Switch on outer perimeter lights when going to sleep or invest in motion detection lights.

·        Try to make your home as inaccessible to criminals as possible.

·        Join your local neighbourhood watch.
