The Independent electoral Commission (IEC) in the Western Cape, will on Friday, launch its Schools Democracy Programme (SDP) for 2024.
This is part of the IEC’s voter
education, with specific aim at the youth, as South Africans prepare to vote in
the upcoming May 29 National and Provincial Elections
The SDP is an annual campaign,
with the IEC engaging with over 220 schools in 2023.
The programme will be launched
by the IEC’s Western Cape Provincial Electoral Officer, Michael Hendrickse and
Deputy Director-General of the Western Cape Education Department, Alan Meyer, at
Bernadino Heights High School, Kraaifontein.
‘’Voter education forms an
important component of the IEC’s mandate and scope of work, in terms of the
Electoral Act,’’ said Michael Hendrickse, Western Cape Provincial Electoral
Officer
‘’The main objectives of this
programme, in collaboration with the Western Cape Education Department (WCED),
are to promote Civic and Democracy Education (CDE) among youth by ensuring that
voter education takes place in our schools; foster a culture of youth
participation in South African democratic spaces; transfer skills/ knowledge by
teaching and exposing educators and democracy champions in secondary schools on
our electoral processes; and encouraging meaningful youth voter registration by
making sure that all learners understand the significance of youth voter
participation in elections,’’ he added.
