More Law Enforcement Advancement plan (LEAP) officers have been deployed to Manenberg, as the area is experiencing an upsurge in gang-related conflict.
Officers have arrested three suspects in the area, within a
12-hour period. A 20-year-old was arrested in Sabie Road on Wednesday morning, for
the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. They recovered a 9mm
pistol with the serial number filed off, and 13 rounds of ammunition.
Just after midnight on Wednesday, a 51-year-old man was arrested
for the possession of a replica firearm and three packets of tik, after Metro
Police officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert; and, during their patrols,
Law Enforcement officers arrested a suspected gang member on a charge of
attempted murder, and detained seven other suspects for profiling.
‘’The area is experiencing an upsurge in gang-related
conflict – in response; the City has increased its LEAP deployment to the area,
to assist the Metro Police Gang and Drug Task Team and the South African Police
Service. The City will maintain its high visibility patrols, until the
situation is stabilised; and we’ll continue efforts to remove firearms from the
streets,’’ said JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety & Security,
JP Smith.
Smith appealed to the public to report illegal activities
to the relevant authorities.
‘’However, we ask that the public please play their part –
if you see anything, please report it. Residents can report crime and by-law
offences anonymously, 24-hours a day, on 0800 110077. Rewards are payable where
information leads to an operational result that directly relates to information
received,’’ he said.
