Scholar amongst two people killed after being caught in gang crossfire in Athlone

A teenage girl was shot and killed after she was caught in a crossfire between rival gangs in Athlone, on Friday afternoon.

The police’s Andrè Traut said the 16-year-old girl was standing at the gates of Belgravia High School in Vlei Road. A 20-year-old man was also killed in Canal Road

‘’The Athlone community is encouraged to assist police with information that will deliver the suspects who are responsible for an incident which claimed the life of an innocent school girl this [Friday] afternoon. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be apprehended,’’ said Colonel Andrè Traut.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) says it is providing support for the learners and staff affected.

Earlier this year, a 12-year-old girl was also caught in the crossfire between rival gangs in Beacon Valley, Mitchell's Plain. Lorenzo Brown has been arrested for Firdous Kleinsmidt murder, and he will reappear in the Mitchell's plain Magistrates Court on 28 June 2024.
