President Cyril Ramaphosa has offered his condolences to the friends and family of five people who died in a building collapse in George in the Southern Cape.
As of 9a.m on Tuesday, 26 people have been pulled from the
rubble, while 49 others remain unaccounted for.
The multi-story construction site collapsed in Victoria
Street on Monday afternoon, prompting a large scale emergency response. The
cause is yet to be determined.
‘’Status of patients: 11 red / 3 yellow / 7 green / 5 blue.
75 construction workers were present on the site at the time of the collapse which
occurred at 14:09 on Monday, 6 May. Three teams of rescue personnel are
currently working on three different areas within the site of the collapsed
building,’’ said George Municipality, in a statement.
Presidency spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, said the
President's thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones as well as
those who are trapped in the rubble.
"President Cyril Ramaphosa wishes rescue teams the
best as they go about their operations and says investigations into the cause
of the accident must bring closure to the community and prevent a repeat of
this disaster," he said.
