The National Sea Rescue Institute is urgently asking boaters, sailors, paddlers, bathers, anglers, and coastal hikers to heed the severe weather warning issued by the South African Weather Services. The alert forecasts rough sea conditions and big waves along the West Coast, Western Cape Coast, and South Cape Coast over the next few days.
The NSRI emphasises the importance of following SAWS weather alerts to ensure people's safety. The predicted rough seas may be affected by the full moon Spring tide peaking on Thursday which will cause the daily high tides to be higher than usual and the low tides to be lower. This phenomenon is expected to generate stronger rip currents and cause waves to reach areas typically unaffected at high tide.
Public caution is strongly advised. Anglers should pay attention to high tide times and avoid the shoreline during these periods. They are also warned against crossing to offshore islands during low tide as they may get stranded when high tide returns. Coastal hikers are advised not to cross river mouths due to strong currents during outgoing tides and to avoid shoreline trails at high tide.
For boaters, sailors, and paddlers, the NSRI stresses the importance of wearing life jackets and having safety equipment ready when navigating rough seas.
