The George building collapse is officially a crime scene and has officially been handed over for a formal investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) who will hand it over to the Department of Labour and Employment for their formal investigation to be conducted.
This means that after about ten days, rescue and recovery
operations at the collapsed building site in Victoria Street have been called
off.
The municipality and authorities have also revised the figure to 62, from 81. In a statement, the George municipality said that as the rescue operation unfolded the numbers fluctuated, however it says only 62 individuals were either recovered or rescued which allows for a 54.8% rescue rate. Of the 62, 33 workers were declared deceased.
Repatriations are being undertaken by the Consulates of
Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi and Lesotho.
