Man arrested in Burgundy Estate for R1.7m illegal alcohol and cigarettes

A 52-year-old man is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ court on Monday, after he was caught with a huge consignment of illegal cigarettes and alcohol.

Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said officers responded to a hijacking in Klapmuts area, last week. He added that the investigation surrounding this incident confirmed that the delivery vehicle had been driven to an unknown location.

Upon further investigation police were led to a warehouse in Burgundy Estate, where they caught the suspect with the huge consignment of about R1.7 million on Thursday

‘’At this facility, the police members discovered a huge consignment of alcohol and cigarettes. The adult male at the warehouse, a foreign national could not provide the proof of purchase and was subsequently arrested for the mentioned property,’’ said  Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi.

The suspect faces a charge of possession of presumed stolen property.
