President Cyril Ramaphosa is briefed by Nelson Mandela Bay officials on the recent flooding

The Eastern Cape's Nelson Mandela Bay officials briefed President Cyril Ramaphosa on the recent flooding in some areas of the province. Tuesday saw the declaration of a state of disaster following the flooding that destroyed thousands of homes, left 11 people dead and damaged infrastructure.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will evaluate the responses to the weather related crises from local government agencies, entities, and civil society organizations. Ramaphosa is anticipated to visit several locations impacted by the flooding in the metro, according to Gary van Niekerk, the executive mayor of the municipality.

“Officials of the National Disaster Management Centre have been deployed to the affected areas and national, provincial, and local departments and agencies including the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, the Department of Home Affairs, the National Department of Transport, the Department of Basic Education, the Department of Human Settlements and the South African Social Security Agency are attending to challenges faced by communities. More departments and entities will join these efforts as needs are identified,” said the Presidency.
