City of Cape Town firefighters have recovered a body in the Kuilsriver area believed to be that of a person who fell into the Highbury Canal during severe weather on Thursday. Teams from the Kuilsriver Fire Station made the discovery yesterday and alerted the police.
Over the past few days, the City of Cape Town availed its
Fire and Rescue swift water rescue team, the Law Enforcement Marine and
Environmental Unit and a drone. Mayco Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith expressed
condolences to the victim’s family and thanked everyone involved in the 4-day
search.
Smith noted this was the second such incident in the City
during the severe weather conditions. He pleaded with the public to exercise
caution as the waterways remain at capacity and a man had recently drowned
after his vehicle became submerged in a wetland.
Smith warned the public to be incredibly careful at all
times given the ongoing impacts of the severe weather.
‘’Our waterways remain at capacity, and this will likely be
the situation for a while still. I want to caution the public to please be incredibly
careful at all times.’'
