President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Public Procurement Act and said that the newly signed act is another important step in ensuring that public funds are put to use where intended.
The act is aimed at creating a framework that will
regulate public procurement that protects public servants who are working in
the procurement space and provide transparency in the awarding of government
tenders.
Ramaphosa said State contracts will no longer
be awarded away from public scrutiny under the new tender law.
The report of the Commission of Inquiry into
State Capture, Chef Justice Raymond Zondo described corruption in procurement
as the centrepiece of State capture.
Zondo consequently made several recommendations
on how to prevent corruption in the procurement of goods and services by the
government.
“The law eliminates the problem identified by
Chief Justice Raymond Zondo of fragmented procurement laws by creating a more
centralised system”, said Ramaphosa.
