Police recover copper worth about R20m from Durban scrapyard

Police in KwaZulu-Natal have seized copper valued at around R20 million from a scrapyard in Queensburgh, south of Durban. Most of this copper is thought to have been stolen from the eThekwini Municipality.

Officers received a tip-off on Wednesday regarding the sale of the copper. Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda stated when they arrived at the scrapyard, they found copper that appeared suspicious and engaged with the relevant authorities.

So far, the eThekwini Municipality has confirmed that this large quantity of copper, believed to be illegal, belongs to them. He added that the scrapyard owner has been arrested.

A 59-year-old man, who claimed to be the manager of the scrapyard, has been detained and will be charged and brought to court after a thorough processing.
