Law enforcement officers has been deployed to
escort City of Cape Town Urban Waste teams in Marcus Garvey-Browns Farm, Lower
Crossroads, Samora Machel and Unathi Bester – Philippi.
This means that waste collection services in
Browns Farm and surrounding communities where services were previously suspended
as a result of extortion, will resume as of Wednesday.
Services were suspended on 21 November 2024
after four security guards accompanying a waste collection truck were shot
during an attack in Marcus Garvey, Browns Farm.
Residents in the affected areas should please
take their bins out on the scheduled collection day.
‘’Restoration of services has been made
possible by City Law Enforcement who have committed significant capacity to
protecting Urban Waste crews for the coming months. It is hoped that this will
effectively deter criminals, however residents should be aware that further
service delays or disruptions could occur if there is any escalation of threats
or violence. If you are affected by delays, please take your bin out each day
until it is emptied,’’ said Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban
Waste Management.
He warned that residents should keep an eye out
for further updates as the situation could change at short notice.
