SAPS warns stokvel clubs against carrying cash to avoid being victims of crime

South Africans often form stokvel groups, for monthly savings that mature by the end of the year and distribution is often during the festive season but a smooth ceiling distribution is never guaranteed.

There has been reports of theft of stokvel funds.

In a recent incident, a 54-year-old women fell victim of a house robbery, in Polokwane and while she was in possession of her social club money.

“In the evening, about three unknown male suspects instantly broke into her house and robbed a substantial amount of cash belonging to the social club and later locked the two victims inside one of the bedrooms before fleeing the scene on foot,” said colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Limpopo police spokesperson.

A case was opened of house robbery following the incident and a manhunt for three men is underway.

The Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe highlighted that she has prior warned the communities particularly Social Clubs against carrying lumps some of cash to minimize risk of crime.
