Strand beach claims life of elderly man in suspected drowning incident

Cape Town police have opened an inquest docket following the suspected fatal drowning on Tuesday morning.  

NSRI Gordons Bay station commander Ryan Holmes said NSRI, Gordons Bay crew, and the CoCT water rescue teams responded to reports of a drowning in progress at Strand Beach.

It is alleged that a man appearing to be in difficulty in the surf with a long board, had been rescued from the water with the assistance of bystanders. He was however unresponsive.

Services in place proceeded to the scene, unfortunately all efforts to resuscitate the 62-year-old did not work. He was declared deceased on the scene.

“The body of the man has been taken into the care of Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services. Condolences are conveyed to the family and friends of the deceased man,'' said Ryan Holmes, NSRI Gordons Bay station commander.
