The Good Party in the Western Cape criticised the provincial government’s decision to use part of the Tafelberg School site for social services.
The government wants to use
the school building for social services for disabled or elderly people. This is
according to Infrastructure MEC Tertuis Simmers.
Premier Alan Winde, however,
said that his administration would make the site available for affordable
housing six years ago.
Good’s Secretary General, Brett Herron, says Winde has since gone back on this promise.
“Studies have shown that the site is viable for affordable housing when the school building is included. If the school building is excluded, the remainder of the site may still be viable for affordable housing” said Herron.
Herron says the government has
turned a blind eye to the housing crisis that the site could have helped
resolve.
