The Hawks in the Western Cape has on Wednesday arrested a 27-year-old suspect after officers discovered a clandestine laboratory in Paarl where steroids were being illegally manufactured.
Provincial spokesperson, Siyabulela Vukubi said the
discovery stems from two years ago, when the Hawks’ received information about
steroids that were couriered from Franschoek and distributed to local
recipients.
‘’The parcels were intercepted and sent to the laboratory
for testing of which the report came back positive. Two suspects were
identified and further investigation was conducted. Today, 12 February 2025,
premises was identified and it was fully operational. Search and seizure
operation was authorised and conducted. During the search, pressing, sorting
and labelling machines, scales and ovens were discovered. Moreover, powder and
suspected Schedule 4 medicines were also discovered,’’ said Lieutenant
Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi, Hawks Western Cape spokesperson.
He says the value of the steroids is yet to be determined
and the suspect is expected to appear at the Paarl Magistrates Court soon. The
Hawks has not ruled out more arrests.
