Proceedings at the Sexual Offences Court in Khayelitsha have either been moved to a different court room or postponed, as opportunistic criminals over the weekend tried to steal equipment.
Police confirmed that Lingelethu West police registered a
case of business burglary for further investigation.
‘’Lingelethu West police were busy with patrols in the
early hour of Sunday
13 April 2025. At about 04:30, they drove near to the Magistrates' court
in
Khayelitsha when they saw a computer monitor , lying unattended outside the building.
The members investigated and found two television sets nearby. The suspects fled
the scene,’’ said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Western Cape police
spokesperson.
Civil activist organisation, Action Society, expressed
anger towards the incident. According to the organisation, suspects stole
televisions, monitors and speakers.
‘’Many cases on the roll in these courts, some of which
Action Society are involved with, will be delayed until the courts can restore
the stolen equipment or an alternative venue can be found,’’ said Kaylynn Palm,
Head of Action Society’s Action Centre.
“It’s saddening to see how our society seems to have no
regard for law and order. There are already enough hurdles in getting these
sensitive court cases heard, and now we have criminals stealing from the
courts. We hope that the court can restore these items and get back to schedule
as soon as possible,” she added.
Anyone with information regarding the incident are
urged to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
