The case against a suspected human trafficker will resume in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court, next week.
35-year-old Sinazo Yvonne Gidimisane is amongst three suspects accused in a human trafficking case that was reported in September 2024. She was arrested on Thursday and made her first court appearance on Friday.
During September 2024, the Hawks in the Western
Cape, supported by officials from Department of Home Affairs visited a
suspected address in Plumstead, Cape Town. Twelve occupants were found on the
premises of which five female persons were identified as sex workers.
‘’During the investigation, a minor female was
screened and found to be a victim of trafficking. She was handed over to the
social workers from Department of Social Development for emergency placement. Furthermore
two traffickers were identified whereby warrants of arrest were authorised,’’ said Warrant Officer Zinzi
Hani, Hawks spokesperson in the Western Cape.
‘’Between 12 and 24 March 2025, a tracing operation
was conducted which led to the arrest of Rogers Mubiru (34) and with Fatuma Bashiba (38) respectively. They both
remain in custody and the matter has been remanded to 17 April 2025 for formal
bail application,’’ she added.
The Head of the Hawks in the Western Cape, Major
General Mathipa Makgato has applauded the investigation team and said “human
trafficking is an evil form of modern slavery, a network that preys on the
vulnerability of fellow human beings for self-enrichment”.
‘’As the Hawks we are committed in tackling
this scourge, in collaboration with our partners in government and civil
society. Members of the public are urged to report any suspicious of
trafficking in persons to the Crime Stop hotline or their nearest Hawks office,’’
he said.
