Concerns of theft and vandalism has been raised regarding electricity infrastructure.

This comes after five electricity boxes in extensions 7 and 14 in Belhar were vandalised and burnt, leaving residents without power for nearly three weeks.

According to DA Constituency Head in Tygerberg, Alexandra Abrahams, criminals are reportedly targeting electric boxes in order to strip and steal the copper wiring beneath it.

‘’ This criminal activity not only compromises public infrastructure but also the safety and quality of life for law-abiding citizens. While some residents may have access to alternative power supplies, many households do not, including those with seniors dependent on medical equipment such as oxygen machines who are left helpless.’’

Ward 12 Councillor Willie Jaftha condemned the incident saying there are seniors who require oxygen, and also expressed dismay that residents have to get ready for work and school in the dark.
