Police constable arrested for fraud in Leeu-Gamka

Western Cape police have arrested one of their own after a 31-year-old constable from Leeu-Gamka is accused of requesting a suspect in custody to make a payment of R 5 000 to secure his release.

Police confirmed the incident occurred on 9 May 2025.

‘’ The suspect agreed to pay the constable an amount of R 3000 and arranged to pay the balance upon his release. The constable in question used his own mobile device to ensure the suspect make payment into his bank account. The suspect however was never released from custody. The conduct of the police member was reported and ultimately transferred to the Western Cape Provincial Anti – Corruption Unit for further investigation,’’ said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Western Cape police spokesperson.

 Western Cape Police Commissioner, Lt Gen (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile has issued a stern warning against corruption within the ranks of police officers in the Western Cape and he made it clear that the South African Police Service remains committed to a zero tolerance in this regard.

The constable made his first court appearance in the Leeu Gamka Magistrates’ court on Thursday for corruption.
