The 51-year-old Xolani Mbeka was arrested in January 2025 after the police received a tip-off from the community members and survivors. In court, it was heard that his wife filed an assault complaint against him. It is alleged that the man had been sexually assaulting his congregants since 2022. He allegedly forced his victims aged between 15 and 23 to stay after services before raping them.

Mbeka faces seven charges, including rape, attempted murder, and assault, and is accused of coercing young female congregants into sleeping with him in exchange for spiritual healing.

Community activist, Nosiphiwo Daniels, welcomed the verdict

‘’We are pleased with the developments of the case. His case has been transferred to the High Court as of today [Tuesday].’’
