Duo linked to Muizenberg murders arrested

Two suspects will appear in the Muizenberg Magistrate court today as the pair are linked to the Muizenberg murder cases of a police officer and a taxi owner in May 2025

The 48-year-old sergeant was found with multiple gunshot wounds outside his home in Thys Witbooi Street, Vrygrond on 30 May. The officer was dressed in his uniform and on his way to report for duty at the Wynberg SAPS when the incident occurred.

On the same day, police reported the murder of a taxi driver in the nearby Xakabantu informal settlement, who was shot and killed while sitting inside his taxi.  The victim was declared deceased at the scene by medical personnel. The motive behind the attack remains unknown

Police confirmed that that they made a breakthrough in the case by arresting a 23-year-old and 25-year-old on Sunday night

‘’Detectives attached to the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit were conducting a tracing operation on Sunday 27 July 2025 at around 22:45 when they apprehended two suspects… Further arrests are expected as the investigation continues, and the police members remain committed to do anything in their endeavours in pursuit of justice,’’ said Captain Frederick van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson.

The suspects are scheduled to appear in the Muizenberg Magistrate court on Tuesday on murder charges for both cases.
