More GABS buses torched

Various law enforcement agencies have been deployed to the Nyanga area, after Golden Arrow buses were torched in two days.

Two Golden Arrow buses were torched in Phillipi on Monday morning. According to Golden Arrow Bus Service (GABS), a petrol bomb was thrown by assailants using darkness and the homes around them as cover. Eight people were injured in the incident.

A fire on a second bus was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported in that incident.

On Tuesday, GABS confirmed that three passengers were injured after a failed petrol bombing on Govan Mbeki road, Nyanga.

The torching is allegedly sparked by job seekers who feel that they were denied an opportunity regarding the MyCiti construction taking place in the area.

The motive is unknown at this stage.

"Golden Arrow condemns these callous and brazen attacks in the strongest possible terms. We rely on the authorities to determine why these attacks are taking place, and to apprehend those responsible and ensure that everyone is able to move freely and safely within the area," said Bronwen Dyke-Beyer, GABS spokesperson.

Western Cape police confirmed to Bush Radio News that officers of Public Order Police, LEAP and Traffic Services will remain in the area to monitor the situation and respond to any eventualities.
