More than 50 unlicensed firearms and ammunition confiscated across the Cape metro, during July

Law enforcement agencies confiscated more than 50 unlicensed firearms and ammunition across the Cape metro, during the month of July.

In the latest incident, a 25 year old man was arrested in Mitchell’s Plain, on Wednesday.

The police’s Aneliswe Manyana said officers performed crime combatting patrols in a hotspot area in Malva Street, in Eastridge, when they observed how the suspect acted suspiciously by attempting to flee upon noticing the police presence.

‘’The members approached him and witnessed how he threw a black object over a fence. The suspect was apprehended and accompanied back to the residence where he threw the object over the fence. Upon arrival the members searched the area and recovered a black 9 mm pistol on the yard. The suspect faces charges related to the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and will appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ court on the mentioned charges, soon.’’

The Western Cape Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC, Anroux Marais, has commended recent efforts to combat gang-related violence in Mitchells Plain and other areas.

‘’I commend the SAPS, City of Cape Town Metro Police, LEAP officers and community-based structures for their relentless work, commitment, and bravery in achieving these results. I also wish to thank residents for their continued support for our law enforcement agencies. Every resident who came forward with information and tip-offs that directly led to the seizure of these illegal firearms made a valuable contribution in saving lives. Continued joint operations and the sharing of intelligence must remain at the core of our crime-fighting strategy.’’
