Three people have been arrested in Sophiatown in Johannesburg, after a viral video showed them giving a 3-year-old boy a bottleneck to smoke. It is unclear at this stage what substance the child smoked but police confirmed that one of the suspects arrested is the boy’s mother.
‘’Gauteng Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual
Offences (FCS) responded to a call from Sophiatown police station about a child
who was brought to the police station by Johannesburg Metro Police and the
grandmother… The Johannesburg FCS Unit commander Lieutenant Colonel Marema
Mogale and his member responded immediately at about midnight. Three people,
the mother and two men, were immediately detained as they were brought to the
police station by JMPD,’’ said Brigadier Brenda Muridili, Gauteng police
spokesperson.
She says the toddler was taken to hospital for medical
attention and then taken a place of safety.
The trio, aged between 28 and 36, will be charged with
child abuse under domestic violence.
They will appear before the Johannesburg Regional Court, on Thursday.
‘’The allegation that one of the FCS members was called and they told the complainant that they will respond in the morning have been brought to the attention of the Provincial Head of FCS, Brigadier Phumzile Zulu who has instructed the Johannesburg Unit Commander to register an enquiry for investigation. FCS in Gauteng has 22 units strategically located across the province servicing 146 police stations. There are at least 66 detectives on standby from FCS after hours to attend to cases related to their mandate,’’ said Muridili.
