Residents in Khayelitsha are frustrated as they have been left without water.
According to the City of Cape Town, its Water and
Sanitation teams carried out emergency work to replace a faulty valve, which
affected the water supply in the greater Khayelitsha area. However, workers
discovered that two additional valves were found to be faulty.
‘’Teams are still on site attending to the matter. While
significant progress has been made, due to the complexity of the work during
the final stages of the repairs, it is taking longer than expected. The team is
currently grinding the AC pipe to allow the ranger to be properly fitted,’’
said Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation.
‘’Arrangements were made to have four water tankers
available in consultation with the local ward councillors. Residents are
encouraged to contact their local ward councillors for the exact locations of
the water tankers as well as for information related to their arrival. Some of
the tankers are also arriving from outside the City, which could result in a
possible delay.’’
‘’The City understands that this has been a trying time for
residents but we are doing all we can to resolve the matter as urgently as
possible. Our staff have worked tirelessly throughout the weekend and inclement
weather to ensure that water is restored as quickly as possible,’’ concluded
Badroodien.

‘’I have been without water since the weekend. It is
Tuesday and the situation has not changed. The municipality is not doing right
and must work faster to fix the problem.’’
