The cycling community are in mourning, following a fatal collision on Chapmans Peak Drive, Hout Bay, involving three cyclists and a tour bus on Saturday morning.
Chappies, as its affectionately known, is a popular route
for both local and international cyclists, known for its narrow winding road
with spectacular views.
Police confirmed that a cyclist succumbed to injuries.
‘’Hout Bay police registered a culpable homicide case
following an accident on Chapman's Peak Drive, Hout Bay area this morning
(Saturday, 2025-08-02) at 10:05 between a bus and three cyclists. A 57 year old
cyclists died due to injuries sustained on the scene, and a 56 year old male
was airlifted by helicopter to nearby hospital with serious injuries and another
male had minor injuries,’’ said Captain F.C Van Wyk, Western Cape police
spokesperson.
In a separate incident, a cyclist lost his life earlier
this week, after he reportedly swerved into oncoming traffic to avoid a driver
opening a car door and hit a taxi.
Pedal Power Association and Stay Wider of the Rider, says
it has been a devastating week for the cycling community in Cape Town.
