Fatal crash in Phillipi East leaves one dead

Police in Phillipi East are investigating a culpable homicide case following a fatal crash between a bus and a minibus taxi on Monday morning, which claimed the life of the driver of a minibus taxi. Two passengers in the taxi were left injured. It is alleged that the taxi jumped a red robot and crashed into a Golden Arrow bus on Sheffield Road.

‘’Philippi East police registered a culpable homicide case for investigation following a fatal crash between a bus and a minibus taxi on Monday morning, 11 August 2025, in Sheffield Road, Philippi East. The driver of the minibus taxi was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, while two passengers were taken to a medical facility for medical treatment. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,’’ said Sergeant Wesley Twigg, Western Cape police spokesperson.

Golden Arrow Bus Service spokesperson, Bronwen Dyke-Beyer, said the bus was not carrying any passengers at the time as it departed from the depot.

“According to the information available to us, the driver of the third-party vehicle allegedly jumped the red robot causing the third party to collide with our bus.  We are deeply saddened to share that the driver of the third-party vehicle passed away at the scene. Our bus had just departed from the depot and was not carrying any passengers at the time.’’
