Mfuleni cop killer sentenced

A cop killer was sentenced to eight years imprisonment at the Khayelitsha Priority Court on Thursday.

Phindile Christopher Sonyabashe (61) was found guilty of the murder of a police officer, Constable Xolani Xekethwana.

The 40-year-old officer was attached to Makhaza SAPS, and was off duty at the time of the incident. It is reported that on 3 November 2023 Constable Xeketwana was at a social gathering in Mfuleni when an argument erupted between the member and the accused. The accused took out a knife and stabbed Xeketwana in the neck and in his back who fell down and succumbed to injuries on arrival at the hospital.

Sonyabashe handed himself over to the Hawks a day after the incident.

Additionally, Sonyabashe was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The Acting Provincial Head of the Hawks in the Western Cape, Brigadier Mushavhaduvha Ramovha, commended both the investigating and the prosecution team for the job well done in ensuring that the perpetrator faces the full might of the law and justice is finally served.
