A man has been gunned down at a taxi rank in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, on Saturday morning. Western Cape police suspects the motive to be taxi-related violence.
‘’Makhaza police registered a murder case
following a shooting incident on Saturday morning (2025-08-23) at 06:30 at Somerset taxi rank in Makhaza where an adult
male was shot and fatally wounded,’’ said Captain F.C van Wyk, Western Cape
police spokesperson.
‘’According to reports, SAPS members received a complaint
about a shooting incident at the mentioned address. Upon arrival they found the body of the victim with
multiple gunshot wounds to the chest laying on his back half way out the door
of the taxi. The adult male was declared
deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive is believed to be taxi
related. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and
no arrests have been made,’’ he added.
Taxi association, Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi
Association (CODETA) confirmed to Bush Radio News that there is tension within
the taxi industry.
‘’We do not want to jump to conclusion [regarding Saturday’s
incident], but I can confirm that there is tension between CATA and CODETA
route between Somerset West and Strand-CATA route. We want to relay to the
families and commuters affected that we are extremely sorry (sic) and we are
not sure the reason of this killing,’’ said Makhosandile Tumana, CODETA Public Relations
officer.
Police have urged anyone with any information about this
fatal incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile
application MySAPS anonymously.
The incident comes days after seven suspects were arrested
in Imizamo Yethu, following a taxi-related shooting incident in Hout Bay. Two
victims died, while five victims were left injured
