Residents of the Monwabisi Zone 4 informal community have
illegally connected to the sewer pump station on Swartklip Road in Tafelsig.
The City of Cape Town is aware of this.
The city says, in addition to endangering the community's
safety, these illegal connections impair the pump station's operation and frequently
cause sewer obstructions and overflows that have a negative impact on the
neighbourhood. The City has decided to cut off these unlawful connections after
multiple discussions with the local ward council members and the
community. The connections could be
voluntarily removed by the residents; if not, the City would enforce the rules.
Furthermore the City acknowledges the frustrations
expressed by locals, but because of the serious operational, safety, and
environmental hazards, unlawful usage of municipal infrastructure cannot be
allowed. The City is still dedicated to
interacting with all pertinent parties in order to promote a sustainable and
legal course of action. The council
members, city departments, and other pertinent parties will be invited to a
debriefing session.
“I highlighted to the locals that these disconnections,
despite their difficulty, were required to preserve our pump station's ability
to pump sewage out of the neighbourhood and lessen or stop overflows in
Mitchells Plain” said MMC for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien.
In order to protect the safety and welfare of all impacted
neighbourhoods, the City is requesting cooperation during this ongoing process
