Twenty-one suspects are expected to appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrates Court, on Monday, on possible charges of Malicious Damage to Property, Pointing of a Firearm, Public Violence and Possession of Stolen Property.
The incident stems from Friday afternoon, where LEAP
officers came under attack from residents in Valhalla Park, allegedly stoning
the vehicle and attempting to set it alight, as well as theft.
Law enforcement spokesperson, Wayne Dyason, explained at
the time, that officers came across a suspect running with a firearm, in the
area, who pointed it at the vehicle. The driver thus lost control and hit a
wall, injuring three persons in the process
He said a combined tracing operation was initiated by the
City’s Special Investigative Unit (SSIU), Safety and Security Information
Management (SSIMS), along with SAPS and LEAP, which resulted in a number of
arrests.
‘’Officers visited 17 different addresses and took 21
persons into custody. They also recovered some items that were stolen from the
Law Enforcement vehicle during the attack on officers. This included bank
cards, three Samsung tablets, reflective vest, a hand radio, body-worn camera
and a set of car keys. Following interrogation of the detained persons, 11
could be connected to the offences registered, i.e. Malicious Damage to
Property, Pointing of a Firearm, Public Violence and Possession of Stolen
Property,’’ said Dyason.
Dyason said officers conducted operations in the area on
Sunday and received information about an abandoned cellphone.
‘’They confirmed that the phone belongs to one of the
officers who were attacked,’’ said Wayne Dyason, City of Cape Town Law
enforcement spokesperson.
