Disciplinary action will be taken against learners at two Mitchell’s Plain schools, after an altercation broke out in Portland, on Thursday afternoon.
It is understood that learners at Mondale High School were
purportedly dealing with a matter, when learners at Mitchell’s Plain High
School responded by taunting them from across the road. This resulted in stone
throwing during interval.
In a school letter, Mitchell’s Plain High’s Acting
Principal, Rianah Marr Parker, said she met with the deputy principal
of Mondale High School, and resolved the matter. The two separately also hosted
an assembly to caution learners regarding further retaliation.
But when schools dismissed, it is reported that in-fighting
at Mitchells Plain High took place in Pall Mall road.
‘’Please note that this behavior will not be tolerated.
Parents are being contacted, and those learners may not return to school. Those
parents are requested to attend a meeting at school, and learners will receive
a notice of a disciplinary hearing with the SGB. The police have been notified
and will engage with parents. We ask parents/guardians to assist outside our
school and surrounding areas each day,’’ read the statement.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) confirmed the
incident.
‘’The parent community were informed of the incident and
both schools are investigating and disciplinary action will be taken. SAPS will
be informed of the incident and asked to have presence on Friday afternoon and
thankfully there were no further incidents,’’ said Bronagh Hammond, WCED
spokesperson.
