The fight against crime and gangsterism requires a coordinated, whole-of-government response. This was remarks by Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Andries Nel, who addressed residents and stakeholders in Mitchells Plain on Tuesday.
The engagement, held in partnership with the Ministry of Police, brought together senior leaders from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Department of Correctional Services, and Department of Social Development.
“Crime cannot be tackled by one department alone. It
requires collaboration between the police, justice system, correctional
services, social development, and the community,” said Nel.
Community members raised key concerns, including
unemployment, youth vulnerability to gangs and substance abuse, safety for
children and the elderly, and access to recreational and sports facilities.
Nel highlighted ongoing efforts to
strengthen court security, improve infrastructure, and expand the use of
technology, including virtual hearings and integrated case management systems.
These measures aim to ensure timely and effective justice delivery while
maintaining the constitutional rights of all citizens. He also acknowledged the
important role of local programmes in supporting vulnerable groups.
“Sport, skills development, and community-based initiatives
are essential in steering young people away from crime. We will continue
working with municipal authorities and civil society to make these programmes
more accessible.’’
Nel concluded by committing to follow up on the issues
raised and maintain regular engagement with the community.
“We are listening, we are acting, and we are committed to
building a safer Mitchells Plain,” he said.
Various stakeholders will head to Mfuleni Police Station on
Tuesday afternoon to engage in that area. Stakeholders attending the
engagements will include representatives from civic groups, religious leaders,
and Community Policing Forums (CPFs).
‘’The engagements form part of a broader effort by the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster to implement practical, community-driven interventions to combat gang violence and foster safety. They also aim to strengthen inter-departmental cooperation and build sustainable partnerships with affected communities,’’ read the statement.
