Suspected arrested after trying to smuggle a firearm in Wynberg's Regional Court

A suspect has been arrested for trying to smuggle a firearm inside the Wynberg Magistrates' Court this morning.

This arrest comes as Deputy Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Andries Nel visited the Athlone Magistrates' Court, where a shooting took place last Friday.

Earlier this year in April, a man was shot and killed inside the same court building after two firearms were smuggled in by a suspect.

Five people are currently facing murder charges relating to that attack. Malfunctioning metal detectors at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court were singled out as a contributor to security breaches inside that court building.

Justice and Constitutional Development Deputy Minister Andries Nel said the situation has improved since.
