The City of Cape Town’s festive light switch-on are heading to two suburbs in December. The municipality announced that Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis will officially switch on the festive lights in Langa and Mitchells Plain as part of a special open-air celebration.
Langa, one of Cape Town's oldest neighbourhoods, will usher
in the festive season with a festive lights switch-on event along King
Langalibalele Drive and Church Street on Tuesday, 2 December from 16:00 until
21:00.
Meanwhile, Mitchells
Plain, commemorating its 50th anniversary next year, will also celebrate the
return of the Mitchells Plain Festive Lights switch-on event on Friday, 5
December 2025 from 16:00 until 21:00. First
held in 2006, the Mitchells Plain switch-on event returns after a 10-year
hiatus, and will take place on Morgenster Road (in front of the Westridge
Garden) between De Duin Avenue and Victory Drive.
The Cape Town Mayor said both events will feature talented
Cape Town artists, local entertainers, and food stalls as part of
family-focused open-air celebrations.
‘’I’m excited to join the Langa and Mitchells Plain
communities for these upcoming festive light switch-on celebrations. This is a
special year as we expand the joy of these events beyond the City’s main CBD to
bring festive cheer right to the heart of the Mitchells Plain and Langa
communities. Please bring your family and friends along for these joyous
open-air events to ring in the festive season in our city of hope,’’ said Mayor
Hill-Lewis.
Both Langa and Mitchells Plain festive light installations
will be energy saving, as with the main CBD lights. Energy efficient bulbs (1
watt) will ensure far less consumption compared to a normal incandescent lamp
(60/15 watts).
Residents and
motorists are advised that some roads in Langa and Mitchells Plain will be
impacted to accommodate the street-based events.
In Langa, King Langalibalele Drive, between Church Street and Mendi Avenue, will be closed in both directions from 09:00 on 2 December and will reopen at midnight.
In Mitchells Plain, Morgenster Road between Dagbreek and De
Duin avenues will be closed in both directions from 09:00 on 5 December until
00:00 on 6 December.
The line up of performers has not been announced as yet,
but the City of Cape Town advised the public to keep an eye on its social media
platforms.
