A growing concern across communities — more teenagers are getting their hands on illegal guns and the rise in underage gun possession is fueling a dangerous trend of violence and fear.
A 16 and 17-year-old were arrested in Macassar on Monday
for being in possession of two modified imitation firearms and live ammunition
Metro Police spokesperson, Ruth Solomons says officers
attached to the ward-based Neighbourhood Safety Officers programme were called
to a local school after a learner was found in possession of a toy gun.
She explained that officers further followed up on
information which lead them to a residence within the area. They, along with
SAPS, found an imitation firearm and 30 live rounds of ammunition in a females
bedroom, and arrested the 17-year-old for the possession of an illegal firearm
and ammunition.
‘’The female suspect provided further information, leading
officers to her boyfriend’s home, where they found another imitation firearm
and one live round of ammunition. The 16-year-old suspect was also arrested. Initial
indications are that both imitation firearms had been modified to discharge
live rounds.’’
The suspects were detained at Macassar SAPS, and a social
worker has been assigned to the case.
