Dr. Dion George has been given the boot as Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. This change is one of two being made by President Cyril Ramaphosa to the National Executive.
Willem Abraham Stephanus Aucamp will now hold this position.
DA leader John Steenhuisen confirmed that the changes were
made at the party’s request to strengthen its role in advancing the reform
agenda within the GNU.
"The DA entered the Government of National Unity with
a clear mission — to confront South Africa’s most urgent challenges and deliver
tangible improvements in the lives of our citizens."
He dismissed speculation that the removal of Dr George was
due to external pressure, saying the decision was part of a broader effort to
ensure that all DA representatives in government align with the DA's economic
reform priorities.
"It is imperative that these roles are occupied by the
most capable individuals our party has to offer. Collegiality is crucial — our
progress requires steadfast teamwork within and outside government."
Steenhuisen said the new appointments would help strengthen
the DA’s contribution to the GNU and ensure momentum in key areas such as
environmental management and trade.
Furthermore, Alexandra Lilian Amelia Abrahams has been
appointed as Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition.
The appointments were made in accordance with Sections 91
and 93 of the Constitution
In a statement issued on Wednesday evening, the Presidency
said President Ramaphosa wished both new appointees well as they assume their
portfolios.
The move comes as part of ongoing adjustments to the
Government of National Unity (GNU) formed in 2024, which includes several Democratic
Alliance (DA) ministers.
