A manhunt is underway for suspects who killed three people in Rocklands, Mitchell’s Plain on Tuesday night. The incident in Viscount Street claimed the lives of a nine-year-old boy, a 21-year-old woman, and a 26-year-old man, while two men aged 51 and 36 were wounded and rushed to medical facilities for treatment.
‘’Preliminary reports indicate that four unidentified
gunmen opened fire on the premises before entering the house and shooting the
victims. Detectives from the Anti-Gang Unit have been assigned to the
investigation and are pursuing several promising leads to track down the
perpetrators responsible for this heinous crime,’’ said Colonel Andrè Traut,
Western Cape police spokesperson.
Western Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General (Adv.)
Thembisile Patekile, has strongly condemned the attack and reaffirmed the SAPS’
commitment to protecting communities from gang-related violence.
“This cowardly and senseless act will not go unanswered.
Gangsterism has no place in our society. We will not allow criminals to hold
our communities hostage through fear and violence. The SAPS will not relent, we
will tighten the net around these criminal elements and ensure that every
individual involved in violent gang activity is brought before the law.’’
Patekile issued a stern warning to gangsters who threaten
the safety and wellbeing of communities.
“Your days of terror are numbered. We are coming, and we
will ensure you face the full might of the law.”
The Cape Flats Safety Forum
condemned the incident and called for a state of disaster to be
declared.
‘’We call for a 72-hour activation plan so that the suspects can be arrested. We further call for SANDF to be deployed. We also call for a special probe to be set up that deals with gang violence. We urgently call on Western Cape premier, Alan Winde to declare a state of disaster,’’ said Abie Isaacs, chairperson of Cape Flats Safety Forum.
In August, a double murder occurred at the same property,
claiming the lives of two men aged 37 and 40 in a gang-related incident.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said at the time, “According to reports a black and grey vehicle stopped next to the victims and
the occupant started shooting at the victims before fleeing the scene. Both
victims were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive
for the attack is gang-related.’’
The SAPS called on community members to assist by providing
any information that may help advance the investigation. Information may be
shared anonymously via Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or through the MySAPS mobile
application.
