The Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association has won its court bid against the City of Cape Town

The Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association has won its court bid against the City of Cape Town after approval to use Vygieskraal Stadium was withdrawn. The Western Cape High Court ordered the city to provide an alternative venue and assist with safety requirements.

The association’s spokesperson Sedick Soeker welcomed the ruling, saying it brought “much relief,” adding, “We had hard chores and heartbreaks for years against the City of Cape Town and they have been victimizing.” He said the association will march the historic parade route in protest on the 3 January 2026.

The ANC in the Western Cape also welcomed the ruling. Provincial convener Jerimia Thunysma said, “We have a responsibility to ensure that people have the right to practice their culture.”
