Convicted pedophile and former Cape Town teacher Iain Wares is expected to be sentenced in the Wynberg Regional Court today
The 86-year-old was found guilty in March of indecently assaulting a former learner, identified only as Stephen, while he was a Grade 5 pupil at Rondebosch Boys’ Primary School in 1988.
During the trial, Stephen testified that Wares touched him inappropriately while he was attending the school. Wares denied the allegations throughout the proceedings, maintaining that he did not remember the complainant and insisting he could not have committed the offense.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with reports indicating that more than 100 men have accused Wares of abuse over several decades.
Today’s sentencing is expected to mark a significant moment for survivors who have come forward with allegations against the former teacher.
