• Lotus River Mother Appears in Court After Newborn Found in Drain.

A deeply distressing case has unfolded in Lotus River, Cape Town, where a 31-year-old woman now faces a charge of murder following the discovery of her newborn baby’s body.

The accused, Ireesha Francis, appeared before the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court, where the State formally upgraded the charge from child neglect to murder after new developments in the investigation.

The baby was found on Sunday in a drain at the corner of 2nd Avenue and Antelope Street in Lotus River, wrapped in blankets and plastic. Police say the child had been born healthy at a local clinic just two days earlier.

Authorities became concerned after the mother returned home without the baby and gave conflicting explanations about what had happened.

The case has been postponed to 14 May for a formal bail application as investigations continue.
