Ramaphosa Refuses to Resign Amid Renewed Phala Phala Pressure

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he will not resign following the Constitutional Court ruling that revived the Section 89 panel report linked to the Phala Phala scandal.

In a national address on Monday, Ramaphosa said there was nothing in the court’s judgment compelling him to step down, despite growing calls from opposition parties and critics demanding his resignation.

The Constitutional Court ruled on Friday that Parliament acted unlawfully when it voted in December 2022 to dismiss the independent panel report that found there may be grounds to suggest misconduct by the president.

The president also confirmed that his legal team will relaunch a court review application challenging the findings of the Section 89 panel report, arguing that the process must follow the law and constitutional principles.

The Phala Phala controversy first emerged in 2022 after allegations surfaced that thousands of US dollars stolen from the farm were concealed from authorities. Ramaphosa has consistently denied wrongdoing.

The Constitutional Court’s decision now reopens the possibility of a parliamentary impeachment inquiry, placing renewed political pressure on the president.
